Ampicilline is een aminopenicilline welke een bactericide werking uitoefenen via interferentie met de synthese van de bacteriële celwand. Het wordt geïnactiveerd door ß-lactamase producerende kiemen.[1]
Spectrum
Gram+ spectrum gelijkaardig aan dat van Penicillin G. De toevoeging van een aminogroep verhoogt de werking tov penicilline tegen over Gram- bacteriën echter significant.[2]Ampicilline is actief tegen alpha- and ß-hemolytische streptococci, inclusief Streptococcus equi, non–penicillinase-producerende staphylococcen, sommige Bacillus anthracis stammen, de meeste Clostridia stammen, vele E. coli, Salmonella, en Pasteurella multocida.[3]
Aminopenicillines zijn inactief tegenover Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Proteus, Bacteroïdes fragilis, en penicillinase-producerende staphylococcen.[3]

- 10 mg/kg PO bid
- 7 (RTU) -15 (LA) mg/kg IM, SC sid
